A Signed and Dated Shaker Tall Chest of Drawers

A grand and impressive free standing Shaker case piece of a rare and distinctive form of construction found primarily in furniture from Watervliet, NY. These corner post cases derive great strength and rigidity from having each drawer divider, drawer runner and rear drawer support deeply mortised into the corner posts. The case is fitted with seven molded lip dovetailed drawers all equal in size with the exception of the top drawer which is substantially shallower. Each drawer is fitted with original hand threaded knobs having a distinctive flat face. While examples of this form of furniture have been historically attributed to the hand of Elder Freegift Wells this chest bears the inscription "W. Bates 1847" on the interior of the right sides vertical panel. Exquisitely constructed of pine with hardwood knobs this chest appears to retain its’ original stain and varnish finish.
