A Brass Menagerie: Metalwork of the Aesthetic Movement

This exhibition catalogue focuses on the often neglected, and extemely intricate and beautiful metalwork of the Aesthetic Movement. On view for only five months, from October 2, 2005, through March 19, 2006, the exhibition at the Munson Williams Proctor ARTS Institute took art brass of the late 19th century and elevated the everyday objects to an art form in their own right. The adaptability and strength of brass allowed for its use in any number of everyday objects--from furniture, andirons, and hardware, to lighting, mirrors, and objects like inkwells. The catalogue has 96 pages and features more than 75 objects shown with more than 100 beautiful full color photographs. An essay by the curator on, "The Rage for Brass" is followed by an essay on the "Ornamental Finishes on Art Brass: Conservation Challenges" by Katherine Holbrow and Gerri Strickler. The bulk of the publication is devoted to the easily readable catalogue and is divided by maker. Selected manufacturers' biographies are included throughout and the catalogue information on each object is thorough. Excellent as new condition.
