This 10 inch porcelain platter is from a large dinner service made in China circa 1803 for DeWitt Clinton. It is of a very fine and unique design as no other similar services are known. The top portion bears the elaborate initials in gold "DWMC" for DeWitt and Maria Clinton who were married in 1796. Clinton was a giant in New York politics. He served as Mayor of NY City, Senator from NY State, Governor of NY State when he presided over the opening of the Erie Canal in 1825 and almost President of the US (he lost to Madison in 1817). The market for Presidential China is extremely strong. I propose starting an Almost-Presidential China market.
This set of China is important enough to merit a full page color illustration in David Howard's definitive book on the subject titled "New York and the China Trade" page 104. The illustration and accompanying text are duplicated below. The NY Historical Society owns a number of pieces from this service.
