HEPPLEWHITE MAHOGANIZED BIRCH LOLLING CHAIR MADE IN NEW HAMPSHIRE 1790-1800

Although lolling chairs are both beautifully designed and comfortable to sit in, very few were made in the Federal period.  Almost all known examples were made in either Massachusetts or New Hampshire but we do not know why!  This particular chair is made of birch wood which retains its beautiful original mahoganized finish.  This is an indication that it was made in New Hampshire where the native wood birch was plentiful.  Note the terrific rake to the back.  This is a very desirable chair in wonderful original condition.  Note that it retains its full original height and its proportions are exemplary.  It is newly reupholstered and ready to go into your home.  Since lolling chairs are not upholstered on the arms they are perfect chairs for the middle of a room because they do not block the view as more masssive wing chairs do.
