This brightly colored coverlet with the interesting house borders boldly depicts large buildings surrounded by birds and stars in the air and leaves and flowers on the ground. The central area is filled with floral designs. The red, green, and blue wools create a bright contrast to the white cotton ground. The design is accented by the white cotton fringe on the bottom edge and the the colored wool fringes on each side. The corner blocks identify the weaver as Jacob Witmer who worked in Manor Twp. Lancaster Co between the years 1837 and 1851. This piece is dated 1849. It is in excellent unused condition and measures 92 x 74 inches.
