A Rare Silk and Canvas Picture of a British Ship in American Waters



Initialed M.C. and dated January 1901

 

The picture depicts a portside view of a steamship with three masts created in silk on a painted canvas background.  The ship is underway with the three funnels belching smoke with a sunset visible in the background.  An American flag on the foremast meaning the ship is visiting an American port.  The main-mast flies a pennant in red with the letters USM and the mizzen-mast a cream flag with a blue bird.
