Pennsylvania,19th century watercolor/ fraktur/book plate of two fancy birds- a peacock and a phoenix. The details are exquisite and the condition is excellent. The bird on the left is a royal blue peacock with a green wing. The bird on the right is a red phoenix with blue wings. Both are perched on a weeping type tree, perhaps a willow or palm. This piece is most likely an allegorical rendering. In early Christian thought, a peacock and a phoenix as a pair represented the resurrection of Christ. The red and yellow paint decorated period pine frame is in excellent condition.
