Needlework Picture by Susanna Hoch, dated 1848 Berks County, Pennsylvania

Wool on canvas
Original walnut frame
H: 29"; W: 31"

A colorful Biedermeier style pictorial sampler wrought by Susanna Hoch (1840-1909) from Oley Township in Berks County, Pennsylvania. Susanna was the daughter of Jacob Yoder Hoch and Catherine DeTurk Hoch. Susanna was a communicant at the Friedens United Church of Christ in Oley in 1853, and she married Daniel Butz (1831-1917), a farmer from Longswamp Township in 1859. Samplers with these motifs - sprays of flowers, animals, architectural features- presented as individual pictures within a border were popular in Oley during the mid-19th century. This example survives in excellent condition with bright colors and a clean ground.
