19th Century Victorian Fancy Baby Carriage, circa 1878

This was the deluxe model and the Cadillac of baby carriages for the Victorian period 1850-1900. Products from the Haskell Company are very rare and held in high esteem because of their quality. The circa 1870's baby carriage is all original with a superb suspension system (see images) consisting of bent wrought iron resting on steel axles.
The four large, all wooden wheels with 10 spokes, provided additional support and maneuverability. The leather adjustable sun canopy is complete with it's original fringe; and the interior tweed upholstery is as it was from the date of manufacture. Note the fancy stenciling on both sides of the carriage, and even on the up facing side of the horizontal support stretcher. (see images). This type of stenciling is duplicated on many 19th century toys, that are highly sought after by collectors today.

The owner and founder of the company, Marvin S. Haskell, became a millionaire as a result of the success of his company, which was in business from 1870 through 1930, at 52 Madison St., Chicago, Illinois. They were a well known maker of a number of upscale products and were the Louis Vuitton of their era, making deluxe steamer trunks.

The condition of the carriage is very good and has no restoration. There are a couple of small tears in the leather canopy, which is slightly out of shape (see images). There is some fabric loss to the back end of one side under the wood slats. There is a repair to the wood handle (re-glue) which is indicated on a close-up image. Wear is consistent with age.

Measurements are as follows:

22" wide
51 1/2" long (overall)
44 1/2" high (to top of canopy)
32" high to top of back of carriage
28" high to top of front of carriage
23 1/2" Diameter of rear wheel
20 1/2" Diameter of front wheel

The above measurements make this carriage larger than most others found from that era.

In addition to carriage and transportation collectors, this is a great item for doll, toy, or teddy bear collectors.
