Westerwald Stoneware Tankard With Bird Decoration,
Pewter cover dated 1736.
The striking cylindrical stoneware tankard with blue ground and incised scrolling leaf decoration and a band of dramatic stylized birds around the centre. Encircling the border and above the foot is a series of designs appearing like fish scales.
The pewter cover with three stamped marks- one with anchor and date 1736 across the center and laurel leaf band below. An "S" is visible too above. The second mark shows a standing bear with objects in its paws. The outside of the cover has the initialsF.M.S & the number 3 below.
