Chinese Export Porcelain Armorial Pair of Plates,
Arms of Clarke of Sandford,
A pair of most unusual Chinese Export armorial plates with a border of scattered famille rose flowers and a full central design with a landscape scene with a tree in the center with the armorial coat of arms of a shield hanging from a tree branch.
Diameter: 8 5/8 inches
Reference: Chinese Export Porcelain, David Sanctuary Howard, Page 503, P22. The author mentions that the image of the shield hung on a tree near a sandy ford may depict a recognizable reach of the River Thames.
Howard mentions that the Metropolitan Museum of Art has a small milk jug from the McCann collection (No. 51 86.368).
