Reference: The Decorative Arts of The China Trade: Paintings, furnishings and exotic curiosities, Carl L. Crossman, Page 281, The author writes: "On rare occasions, a tea caddy, work or stationery box was made of red lacquer with painted gold designs.  These are particularly handsome since the red lacquer contrasts strikingly with the gold. Most of the red lacquered items would seem to date from the second quarter of the 19th century".
