New York, c. 1825-30

H: 37½"  W: 81"  D: 29"   seat height: 17"

Condition: Excellent: The upholstery shows signs of wear.

The box sofa seems to have originated with designs published by George Smith in Collection of Designs for Household Furniture (London, 1808), pls. 59 and 60, and begins to appear in American sofas in the 1820s, the form reaching its apogee in New York between 1825 and 1840.  This fine example with stepped crest rail is rare and may be unique.  Its reproduction upholstery is an extraordinary example of period style at its best.
