Quaker Schoolgirl Watercolor and Pen & Ink Map of the United States, Susan Mott, Flushing, New York, 1818

This beautifully drawn and delicately colored map of the United States of America is signed, “Susan Mott Flushing 7th Month 1818.” While not a sampler, this fits squarely into the world of schoolgirl art and would likely have been offered in a curriculum similar to samplermaking. The map is highly detailed with many interesting, period place names designated - such as “Yazoo Speculation” in Mississippi, “Unexplored Country” in Missouri and “Immense Forests” in Canada. Of course, there are both States and Territories. Note the wonderful rendering of the Finger Lakes and the inked dots forming St. Georges Bank.

The Quaker phrasing to the date and font of the lettering would point to the strong likelihood that it was produced at a Friends school. There was a vibrant Friends population and active community in Flushing at the time and the Mott family had Quaker strong roots.

Susan Mott was born on May 10, 1802 in New York, New York to Abigail (Thorn, 1780-1836) and Joseph Mott (1762-1802), whose birth in 1760 was recorded at the Westbury Monthly Meeting in Nassau, New York. Susan’s great-grandfather William Mott I (1674-1740) lived in Great Neck, New York and was noted in 1702 Minutes for proposing to host a Friend’s Monthly Meeting at his house. While Susan’s birth was not recorded at a Meeting, she was likely sent to a Quaker school in Flushing, perhaps affiliated with Flushing Monthly Meeting.

Susan married Isaac Spencer Allen (1804-1881) on August 17, 1831 in Skaneateles, Onondaga County, New York. After the birth of their first two children, Susan and Isaac removed to Auburn, Cayuga Co., New York had two more children. Susan died on December 5, 1883 and is buried in Auburn.

Pen and ink and watercolor on paper, in excellent condition with some very minor foxing. It is in a 19th century walnut frame.
