4.2 x 5.10 Antique Chi Chi Rug, Northeast Caucasus, Circa 1890

4.2 x 5.10 Antique Chi Chi Rug, Northeast Caucasus, Circa 1890

Antique Chi Chi rugs are among the most prized types of village rugs woven in the northeast Caucasus in the 19th and early 20th centuries. They often feature an all-over pattern of geometric motifs, some of which might be stylized flowers. This example alternates rows of cycles enclosing stars with more rectilinear and abstract latch hook type motifs. The classic, brown Chi Chi border is complemented by three guard borders and ancillary guard stripes. The Reciprocal Trefoil outer guard border is a nice feature.

This field color in this rug, a soft and warm salmon shade, makes it very decorative. It would goes as well in a modern interior as in an 18th century home.

Generally very good condition with thin pile and oxidized browns.
