COLLECTIONS FORUM AT HISTORIC DEERFIELD
October 9th, 2004 3 P.M.
Neoclassical Furniture in Western Massachusetts is the subject of the afternoon Collections Forum at Historic Deerfield in conjunction with the Antiques Dealers of America Show at Deerfield Academy, October 9-10. The forum on the afternoon of Saturday, the 9th, will focus on the radical evolution in furniture design and technology that occurred almost overnight when fashion shifted from the Georgian emphasis on symmetry and naturalism to the rich surfaces and academic inspiration of neoclassicism. While this shift is often explored in the urban context of the great seaport cities around the Atlantic rim, its manifestation in rural America-and in western Massachusetts-reveals a great deal about the wealth of agrarian society and its own quest for change at the expense of the "tried and true." Join Joshua Lane and Philip Zea for an afternoon of exploring the past through its material culture.
