An ancient stone pounder used by native Hawaiian people to make poi, a pudding like dish, created by smashing and then fermenting taro root. Hand crafted from basalt stone, this example has fine patina and color veins in the stone. Approx. 8 by 5 inches, good condition, a couple small chips around the pounding edge as expected. A very fine form object from Native Polynesia.
Note: the actual patina and color is slightly darker in person than the photos.
