She has a vulnerability that implies a close relationship w/ the sitter in a style that explores bold outlines & occasional impasto over Post Impressionism. This is clearly the work of a talented painter finding their style. Exceptional color palette.
Signed Hollenbaugh red bottom right & identified again on the canvas reverse. This is likely the work of Robert K. (Kingsley) Hollenbaugh (1917-2005). Hollenbaugh began his education in Harrisburg Pennsylvania, but became interested in art in Buffalo New York working on blue prints under the National Defense Training Program at Burgard Vocational School.
During his early work, Hollenbaugh studied nights at the Art Institute of Buffalo New York under landscape artist William B. Rowe (1910-1955) & later taught there himself. Hollenbaugh is known for his landscapes & portraits. It would not surprise me to hear that this was his sister or young wife. This is an intimate portrait.
Strong, supple canvas 25 x 34” on modern stretchers w/ no condition issues to report.
