This beautifully embroidered and painted memorial was stitched by Nancy Fisher (1792 – 1820) to commemorate her mother Susanna. The faces and backgrond painting were often done by a professional artist. The painting on this piece is attributed to John Johnston. The stitcher was usually depicted herself as the mourner either by herself or within a family group.
Nancy was the third of five children of Elijah Fisher (1765 – 1813) and Susanna Hixon (1768 – 1799).
Silk & watercolor on silk.
