The maker of this unique easy chair was apparently familiar with the English pattern book of designer Thomas King, “Modern Style of Cabinet Work Exemplified”. Published in 1829, plate 25 illustrates a very similar chair design which includes a few more details than this American version uses. An unusually deep seat and a serpentine-shaped back contribute to a chair larger in size than usually encountered in this period. The back of the chair is upholstered using a hand-stitched curled animal hair “cake” while the large seat utilizes one of the earliest uses of hand-tied springs to achieve its support and comfort.
