American Sampler by Harriet Mead, probably Vermont, 1814

A large format and beautifully made sampler offering excellent aesthetics, this is inscribed, “Wrought by Harriet Mead AD 1814 Aged 9 Years,” in robin’s egg blue silk. The pictorial house and garden scene is replete wonderful details such as a seated young lady with her shepherd’s hook, a large stag deer, four white sheep and a dog, a fence and gate with a bird on a fence post and flowering vines. A fine garland of flowers on leafy vine embellishes the top of the sampler nicely. Alphabets are well stitched, the lowermost being a very small, uppercase rendition. The verse was authored by Hannah More (1745-1833), a British writer, poet, educator and social reformer known for her anti-slavery writings.

After much genealogical research, we believe the samplermaker to be Harriet Mead, born on January 8, 1805 in Hinesburg, Chittenden County, Vermont. History and Genealogy of the Mead Family …. By Spencer P. Mead (New York, 1901) and other sources indicate that her parents, Alpheus Mead (1762-1837) and Bersheba Lockwood (1767-1844), were both born in Greenwich, Connecticut. The emigrant ancestor of the Mead family is William Mead II (1600-1663) who was born in Kent, England and died in Stamford, Fairfield County, Connecticut. Harriet was born six generations later.

Alpheus and Bersheba removed from Connecticut to Vermont after the birth of their first child in 1787. Harriet was the youngest of six. In 1828 she married Richard Rose (1802-1876) and they became the parents of two sons. By 1850 they removed to St. Lawrence, New York where she died on August 23, 1876. Harriet is buried in Mound Hill Cemetery along with family members.

The sampler was worked in silk on linen and is in excellent condition. It has been conservation mounted and is in a beveled cherry frame with a black bead.
