Needlework depictions of assorted animals and various species of birds coexisting in a pastoral setting was a popular and appealing subject in the 18th and early 19th centuries. This fully worked scene offers a particularly good composition, placing the animals and birds in a landscape that incorporates little cottages, trees, a pond and a solidly stitched sky with two little birds in flight. Details such as the postures and markings of the creatures add further to the appeal of this piece and the highly lustrous nature of the silk renders it a delight.
Worked in silk on linen, this is in excellent condition. It has been conservation mounted and is in an early 19th century gold leaf frame.
