“Dear Grandmamma”, Miniature Sampler, Fanny & Emily Clifford, England, 1821

Measuring only 3 by 6 inches, this charming miniature sampler was made by two sisters and is signed, “Dear Grandmamma From Fanny & Emily Clifford Anno 1821.” It includes otherwise only an alphabet and the numbers 1 through 8. While all samplers are highly personal in nature, some rare examples were made to be presented to a specific recipient, often a beloved family member.

This sampler was worked in silk on wool and has been conservation mounted. It is in very good condition with some minor areas of loss to the wool that have been secured to the mount. The oak frame is from the late 19^th century.
