RARE PORCELAIN CANDY DISH WITH HANDPAINTED NEW YORK CITY SCENE ENGLISH FOR THE AMERICAN MARKET C. 1830

Titled on the base:

NARROWS FROM FORT HAMILTON AMERICA".  The Narrows is that part of the waterway between Brooklyn and Staten Island where the Atlantic Ocean becomes the Hudson River and the great port of New York is formed. The view is from the fort in Brooklyn looking west to Staten Island.
This subject matter is what makes the dish rare as American scenes on English plates are not often found.  This particular plate is beautifully painted and is in mint original condition.  It is attributed to the Ridgway Company circa 1830's.
