English Creamware Large Jug Decorated with Rustic Scenes of Farm Buildings and Farm Animals,
Staffordshire or Yorkshire,
Circa 1785.
(Ref: ny8369-mip)
This charming creamware pottery jug is hand-painted on each side with different rural farm scenes. To one side is a large house with a mare & foal in the pasture in front of the house. On the reverse side is a thatched house with smoke issuing from the chimney, with a lady sitting outside the door beside a ladder that reaches to the roof and she appears to be holding a broom. In the yard in front of her are chickens and a small dog. Below the spout is an oval orange panel with an entwining leaf band and within are the initials I. I.
Dimensions: 8 inches high x 8 inches wide x 6 1/2 inches (20.32 cm high x 20.32 wide x 16.51 cm deep).
Reference: See "Creamware & Pearlware- The Fifth Exhibition from the Northern Ceramics Society Catalogue", Page 71, #31 for a similar type of painting of a farm on a jug. The entry says possibly Leeds but there is no documentary or excavated evidence to confirm the attribution.
