Probably Northeast America, Hudson River Valley to Connecticut (England can not be ruled out). Dense, weighty cherrywood or mahogany. The earliest dated butter print I have seen or can find in research. Of exceptional cabinet-maker craftsmanship, with double-sided lollipop print with hex-lobed deep carving on one side, with projecting geometric on reverse. Initialed "M rs HH" and dated 1778, the fonts carved by a skilled engraver. Deep scribe line on side of handle and lollipop, the handle terminating in a carving that I have seen on early handled burl bowls. Fine original condition with varnish showing appropriate edge-wear, minor shrinkage hairlines. About 8 ¼ inches long. The finest butter print I have handled. Provenance: Private CT collection.
