An early Pennsylvania German table with turned stretcher base and dovetailed battens, this example is made of cherry birch. It is inscribed on the drawer: “Table made by Granny Kunkel’s grandfather Kuhl about 1850.” The Kunkel family descends from German immigrant Johann Georg Kunkel, who settled near Wessnersville in Berks County sometime prior to 1754. Immigrant Peter Kuhl also settled in Berks County.
