American, ca. late 19th century. Wool on burlap. Pre-dating, yet in a manner relating to that of Joseph Albers, the design features decreasing-sized and color-contrasting squares that immersively draw the observer in. Also pre-dates and relates to the minimalistic designs of Donald Judd. The design further enhanced by the "organicness", or non-linearity of the soft square sides. Mounted for easy hanging. Attention grabbing size of about 38 ½ inches square. A scarce content departure from most 19th century rugs that depict flowers or buildings or animals. Art that would thrive in a historic or contemporary settting. Provenance: Northeast private collection.
