Recumbent Sewer Tile Lion



American, probably Ohio, mid-19thc.
Stoneware with slip glaze.
Customary wear, kiln cracks, one minor repair great surface.
Provenance: Private collection, Massachusetts.
This early example has finely molded details with a scalloped rectangular base while evoking a whimsical “Edward Hicks” feel to the lion’s face.
