A Regency 4-Light Suspended Argand



This fine Regency chandelier is presented in a patinated and two-tone gilt-lacquered finish. The maker was one of the leading manufacturers of elegant lighting in the Regency period. Under the decoration on each arm is stamped in script: Published / by / Johnston.Brookes / Hector & Davidson / April 20th / 1822/ S.4Lt. The canopy is composed of cast foliate and floral elements with an attached pressed brass decorative gallery formed with stamped beads, flowers, and foliage. The chain is made up of finely cast links and rings. Large detailed snake s-hooks secure the chains to brackets adorned with foliate decoration. Centered in the bowl of the chandelier, the tall font is designed in the shape of an ancient urn and is topped with a cast foliate crown. Decorating the font, stamped brass garlands of fruit are draped between bearded Classical masks with horns. The substantial body of the chandelier is adorned with finely cast maiden masks and foliate flourishes. The bottom of the chandelier is finished with a large finial in the shape of a budding flower.
