Pine with rich natural patina. Carved from the solid, then one end cap joined with cut nails.
Deeply engraved MARYAE. BARTLETT BOSTON Mss 1844 (note that the numbers 44 are backward). The back side shows engravings of the front and side of a large likely Meetinghouse (note the arrow weathervane at the top), and a home. The lid with an American flag, stars, and initials AB, one end cap with a star.
A later note inside reads: “MARY A.E. BARTLETT 1830-1909, buried Cambridge, Mass.”. So Mary was 14 years old when this little box was carved.
