Asher B. Durand (1796-1886) painted “Dover Plains, Dutchess County, New York”, in 1848 and due to its immense success, James Smillie (1807-1885) made an engraving of it for the American Art Union in 1850. This painting was likely the source for DeGrailly’s version. A similar painting by DeGrailly is currently in the collection of the New York State Historical Society.
