Colorful Perching Rooster/Chicken Fraktur Drawing

Likely Pennsylvania, ca. 1840. Watercolor on laid paper. Highly stylized rendering of a rooster or chicken with yellow body accented by a bittersweet outline and wing, the wing further highlighted by green which is echoed in the sprigs and leaves upon which the bird perches, and its beak. Note the tiny feet. Simple and elegant. Signed lower right "Mary Jane _____". Housed in a very good period reeded frame. Color remains strong and vibrant. Minor background spotting as shown. This fraktur appears to be by the same hand as the fraktur that sold at the Pennypacker Auction, October 29, 1973, a photocopy of which accompanies this piece. Overall frame size of about 9 1/4 x 7 7/8 inches.
