English Creamware Pottery Cat,
Late 18th Century
The large whimsical cat with brown and iron-red sponging sits on its hind quarters on an oval base with blue sponging with a bemused expression on its face.
Provenance: with Ruth Troiani.
Reference: See The Henry H. Weldon Collection: English Pottery, 1650-1800, Leslie B. Grigsby, Page 338, #193 for a pearlware lion of very similar form. This lion is related to earlier Staffordshire figures made in saltglaze and leadglazed earthenware examples of which can be seen in the Burnap and Earle Collection.
