Cast Iron Fire Plug Hand

Circa 1870 highly detailed and rare "Fire Plug' cast iron hand with pointing finger mounted on a square base with raised lettering, all in original surface and condition, ex Savino collection. In the 18th & 19th centures, when responding to a call, firefighters would bore a hole in the water main to secure the water to fight the fire. The holes were then plugged with redwood stoppers and the locations marked for future use.
