3.11 x 5 Antique Kazak Rug, Southwest Caucasus, Circa 1895
An antique Kazak rug from the southwest Caucasus. The directional form of the field identifies this as a prayer rug.
Green field Kazak rugs are comparatively uncommon and are prized both by collectors and for their decorative properties. Many small Kazak prayer rugs fit into either the Fachralo or Bordjalou groups and it is possible this is of the Fachralo type. That said, the green field and the ivory squares are reminiscent of Karachoph type Kazaks which are typically larger and not in prayer rug form.
The ivory Leaf and Chalice major border and blue and red Reciprocal Trefoil guard borders are nice features, as are the aubergine color highlights.
Areas of wear, minor loss at the ends. The selvedges have been redone.
A moderately priced rug that would be an excellent choice for decorating or new collectors.
