This beautifully proportioned Santos or Cage Doll will set a striking balance when decorating your home. Handmade in Europe over 100 years ago, Santos (Saint) Dolls were used for home worship when a village did not contain a cathedral. Today, Santos Dolls work well as unique decorating accents. The ‘cage’ skirt of the Doll lends itself to holding seasonal decorations, such as a Spring bird’s nest, flowers or holiday greens.
The body, head, hair, and hands are carved wood. The hair is cleverly worked in rows, possibly to suggest curls. The 8 staves of the skirt and the base are all of wood and inset into the body and base. The staves are secured with tacks. The tiny brown glass eyes look almost real as they serenely gaze from beneath the wooden curls. The face and hands are painted flesh color, the hair is painted black, the torso and staves of the skirt painted a pale butter yellow. The arms are wire and covered with aged strips of linen. The Doll is in need of paint conservation because the paint is flaking. Otherwise, the Doll is in sturdy condition.
